20th Century Fox releases the Ad Astra IMAX trailer. Directed by James Gray, the science fiction adventure film stars Brad Pitt. Previous Ad Astra trailers were released in June and July ahead of the movie’s September release date.
In Ad Astra, Pitt portrays Major Roy McBride, the son of missing astronaut Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones), a space explorer pioneer. When the elder McBride goes missing 16 years into a mission, his well-trained son is tasked with not only locating him, but finding out the truth about a mystery that could end life on Earth. Ad Astra was co-written by Gray and Ethan Gross, the latter of whom previously worked on the Fox series Fringe as a story editor. Ad Astra co-stars Ruth Negga, Liv Tyler, and Donald Sutherland. The film will screen at the Venice International Film Festival later this month, and will have a North American premiere in September at the Toronto International Film Festival. Ad Astra was produced for $87 million.
With the new Ad Astra trailer, 20th Century Fox highlights the IMAX experience. Whereas the original trailer focuses on the primary objective, and the second underlines the character backstories, the new video prioritizes a specific mood through audio and visual design. The Ad Astra IMAX trailer immediately pinpoints Roy McBride’s motivations, as he’s concerned about his father. As the clip progresses, however, a complete music drop establishes the character’s frame of mind - he’s alone and at the mercy of the “the endless void.” Pitt’s character initially appears eager for the epic mission, only to slowly become emotionally rattled by his intergalactic experiences. Visually, the Ad Astra IMAX trailer frames Pitt’s character in expansive wide shots, whether it’s a mission prep sequence or a surface chase scene. The 123-second video ends with ominous dialogue from Sutherland’s character, along with a speck of light that seamlessly transforms into the title design. Check out the Ad Astra IMAX trailer below.
IMAX is described as “The World’s Most Immersive Movie Experience,” largely because of super-sized screens and how audiences visually process the images. Dating back to 1970, numerous filmmakers have chosen to shoot their movies solely with IMAX 70mm cameras, with the most recent examples being the 2019 nature documentary Penguins and Christopher Nolan’s upcoming 2020 film Tenet. In the MCU, both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame were shot with ARRI Alexa IMAX cameras and converted to 3D. The new James Bond film, No Time to Die, was partially filmed with IMAX 70mm cameras, along with the upcoming DCEU film Wonder Woman 1984.
Based on Ad Astra’s new IMAX trailer, moviegoers can expect a purely thrilling viewing experience. And based on Gray’s career filmography, which includes underrated gems like The Immigrant and We Own the Night, his new movie could very well become his masterpiece. American fans will find out when Ad Astra premieres in September in the United States.
