Ahead of El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie’s release, star Aaron Paul has personally recapped the events of the original, critically-acclaimed show on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Created by Vince Gilligan, Breaking Bad followed the journey of Walter White (Bryan Cranston) as he transitioned from a mild-mannered high school teacher into the criminal kingpin known as Heisenberg. The character recruited Jesse Pinkman, a former student, to assist him in building his drug empire. Played by Paul, Jesse was originally supposed to be killed off in season 1. The writers, however, had a change of heart and instead kept him around for the entirety of the show’s five, critically-acclaimed seasons.
After years of rumors and speculation, a Jesse Pinkman-centric follow-up was confirmed to be in the works. A full trailer for the feature-length installment soon followed. Matt Jones will return as Jesse’s friend, Badger, and Charles Baker will reprise the role of Skinny Pete, rounding out the show’s infamous trio. Larry Hankin will also return as helpful junkyard owner Old Joe. Alongside them, it’s been reported that at least ten Breaking Bad alumni will be featured in the latest story. Since the announcement, fans have been hastening to rewatch the original series in order to refresh their memories of what came before.
For those that lacked the time to revisit all 60+ episodes, however, Paul has taken it upon himself to lend a hand. Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the Emmy-winning actor ran through the events of the show in under three minutes and in his own inimitable style. Though the Hank character would probably take offence to his collection being called “rocks” rather than minerals, he does a pretty admiral job summing up such an extensive plot in so short a time. He rapidly recounts such iconic moments as the time Jesse tried to dispose of a body in a bathtub in season 1, his ill-fated relationship with “Jessica Jones” in season 2, and multiple murders executed through Walt’s knowledge of science. He also references such classic characters as “the weird uncle in a wheelchair that rings a bell, the scary chicken man, and the grumpy bald guy.”
Paul also references the character of Saul Goodman, who serves as the focal point of the first official spin-off. Titled Better Call Saul, the prequel series debuted in 2015, and has since been inching closer and closer to the start of the Breaking Bad timeline. The spinoff has already aired four seasons, and a fifth has been confirmed for 2020. It has thus far enjoyed similar acclaim as the original show and enjoyed awards recognition in its own right. Since Breaking Bad, Paul has lent his voice to both BoJack Horseman and Black Mirror. He will next be seen in a number of other TV shows, including Westworld season 3.
Fans, however, remain most eager to see him return to the role of Jesse Pinkman. As mentioned in the video, the character was last seen escaping from the captivity of the Neo-Nazi gang that had taken over Walt’s empire. The movie will pick up in that immediate aftermath and will see Jesse on the run from both sides of the law. Details besides that have remained firmly under wraps. Whatever the future holds in El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, however, people can now at least consider themselves (somewhat) caught up on the past.
