In recent times, we have seen quite a lot of apps and websites switching over to the dark side (well not literally, but visually). This has always been among the most requested features for ages, be it for an app, software, or just browsers. In this regard, we have already shared the steps to Enable Dark Mode on Chrome for Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac. However since a large userbase still uses only the Mac ecosystem, they are interested in knowing how they could enable dark mode on their Mac-specific Safari browser.

Across the same lines, iPhone users are also looking for ways to enable this dark mode in this browser. Whether or not this dark mode saves battery is up for debate. But what isn’t debatable is the fact that it is definitely more relaxing to the eyes. It saves your eyes from the protruding glaring white lights from the screen. So the demand for this mode is all the more justified. With that said, if you are also looking to enable Dark Mode on Safari, then this guide will come in handy. Follow the instructions given below.

A Complete Guide To Enable Dark Mode On Safari

First off, we will be listing the steps for the macOS. This will then be followed by the steps for your iOS device. For the former, we will be sharing three different methods. As for the latter (i.e iPhone), two different approaches will be discussed.

On Mac

There are three different methods to achieve the same. Each has its own set of perks and caveats. Proceed with the one that suits your requirements.

Method 1: Using macOS dark theme

As you might have got a clue from the title, we would be making use of the system-wide dark mode functionality. The thing is Safari doesn’t have a native dark mode option. However, it respects the macOS dark theme. So we could take this approach and hence enable dark mode on the browser. To do so, head over to the Apple menu on your Mac and select System Preferences. Then click on General and select Dark.

Once the entire system has adopted the dark mode, so will the browser. But here is the catch. Although the browser will have switched to the dark mode, yet only its home page and some of the other components will have adopted the dark side. The majority will still be in its default white state. In that case, you could give the next method to enable Dark Mode on Safari a try as well.

Method 2: Using Reader Mode

You could also make use of the Apple’s own Reader Mode. For the unawares, this mode trims down all the unnecessary components of the page and only gives you the essential part to focus mode. Likewise, it also gives you the option to change the theme of each individual webpage based on your preference.

To use this feature, launch the desired webpage and if you see three horizontal lines on the left side of the URL bar, then you could use the Reader Mode on that site. Simply click on that icon or the Aa icon situated at the right-hand side of the URL bar. Then you will be given the theme to choose from.

Select the dark theme and that’s it. That entire page will adopt the dark mode. However, this feature also suffers from a drawback. It isn’t supported across all the webpages. Rather you will see the option to enable it only across blogs and articles in general. In that regard, if your desired website isn’t able to enable the Dark mode in Safari via Reader Mode, then you should move over to the third method given below.

Method 3: Via Extensions

You could also use browser extensions to enable dark mode. There are quite a few extensions that could do this job and Dark Mode for Safari happens to be among the very best. Although it requires you to shell out some bucks ($1.99) but if you are really into this dark mode, then you should give it a try.

So download it from the above link downloaded and launch the Safari browser. Then head over to the Preferences option. After that, go to the Extensions tab and switch on the toggle next to “Dark Mode for Safari”. That’s it. There aren’t any caveats associated with this method to enable the Dark mode in Safari, apart from the fact that it comes at a cost.

On iPhone

Just as there wasn’t any dark mode toggle in Safari for Mac, its iOS counterpart suffers from the same fate. However, there still exist a few workarounds through which you could use the Safari browser in the dark mode. Let’s check out two such tweaks. Follow along.

Method 1: Using System-Wide Dark Mode

Similar to macOS dark theme, Safari also respects your iPhone’s dark mode. That is, once you apply the dark theme on your Apple device, so will the browser. But unfortunately, it also ends up sharing the same drawback that macOS had. It wouldn’t enable the dark mode across all the website, rather you would only be able to view the change on its homepage and some of its other components.

Anyways, to try it out, head over to the Settings page and your iPhone. Then go to Display & Brightness and enable the Dark toggle. If it meets your requirements, well and good. Otherwise, refer to the second method to enable dark mode in Safari.

Method 2: Using the Reader Mode

As discussed before, Reader mode is able to trim down non-essential components of a webpage, apart from offering the dark mode across various sites. To try it out on your Apple devices, head over to the Safari browser, and launch the desired webpage. Then if you see the three horizontal lines on the left-hand side of the URL, then that site supports Reader mode.

So tap on the Aa icon situated at the right and select the Dark theme from there. That’s it. That website will then adopt the dark mode. However, it only works on blogs and sites with articles, as discussed before. Anyways, still handy workaround never the less.
